In Indiana they tell you no you may not have a test unless you can hardly breathe or if you're elderly. I called the State health department and asked them why and they said because of many reasons including lack of tests in general. That said - there is nothing they can do other than deal with symptoms, so he should be home and taking care of it as if its the flu. There is little they can do except treat symptoms. Obviously if his symptoms are serious enough, they may need medical attention, but they need to reserve spots and equipment for those people, so you could argue that it is not imperative that he knows if its CV, apart from tracking and exposure to others. My head is about to explode. My SO, an RN in the ICU, has ALL the symptoms of being infected. In the ER (at my SO’s hospital) today he was denied testing because he has not had contact with a verified case. Well of course he hasn’t, there has only been 1 test performed in our city! He has however, cared for pneumonia / isolation patients in his ICU. This administration will have the blood of all the victims of this virus on their hands. There is no avenue for you to be tested currently in the United States. The best thing you can do at the moment is self-quarantine. Most people exhibit symptoms after about 5 days, but some do not for as much as two weeks (hence the 14-day quarantine period being used in most places). This makes my blood boil. I've been sick all week with symptoms that line up with the coronavirus - particularly shortness of breath and difficulty breathing. I've been to urgent care, the ER (after waking up gasping for breath), and my PCP. Each time I've directly asked to be tested, and each time I was denied because I haven't been to an infected country nor have I been around anyone who has. There is a critical shortage of these tests and it's going to kill people. I'm already immunocompromised to begin and even I can't get tested with the symptoms I've mentioned.
